BookNawa Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how BookNawa (“BookNawa”, “we”, “our”, or “us”) collects, uses, stores, shares, and protects personal information when you use the BookNawa mobile application and related online services (together, the “Service”).

By creating an account, signing in, or otherwise using the Service, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please uninstall the app and stop using the Service.

2. Information We Collect

We collect information in the following categories:

2.1 Account and profile information

• Full name, email address, and password (stored securely by our authentication systems)
• Username, biography, reading interests, and optional phone number
• Profile photo if you choose to upload one from your device gallery
• Email verification status and account creation/update timestamps
• Information received when you sign in with Google or Apple (such as name, email address, and profile identifier), as permitted by those providers

2.2 Reading and app activity

• Books browsed, read, bookmarked, or added to your library
• Reading progress, session duration, notes, highlights, and listening activity
• Quiz scores and reading goals or achievements
• Search queries and discovery interactions within the app
• Language, theme, and other in-app preference settings

2.3 Community content

• Comments, discussion posts, replies, and other content you submit in community features
• Community moderation status, such as warnings or posting restrictions where applicable

2.4 Device, technical, and diagnostic information

• Device type, operating system version, app version, and general device identifiers needed to operate the Service
• Push notification token if you enable notifications
• Network connectivity status to support offline mode and synchronization
• Crash logs, error reports, and performance data needed to maintain app stability
• Approximate IP address and standard server logs when you connect to our backend

2.5 Locally stored data

• Authentication tokens and session data stored using secure on-device storage
• Cached content, reading progress, and pending sync data stored locally to support offline use
• Locally buffered usage analytics events used to improve app performance and recommendations

Location data: BookNawa does not collect precise GPS location. We do not request location permissions for core app functionality.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use personal information to:

• Create, authenticate, and manage your account
• Provide reading, listening, library, quiz, and discovery features
• Sync your progress, notes, bookmarks, and preferences across devices
• Operate community discussions and enforce community standards
• Send service-related notifications, reading reminders, and account messages you opt into
• Personalize recommendations and improve content discovery
• Monitor performance, diagnose errors, prevent abuse, and protect account security
• Comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests
• Improve and develop the Service, including aggregated and anonymized analytics

We do not use automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects without appropriate safeguards where required by law.

Where applicable data protection laws require a legal basis, we rely on:

• Contract: to provide the Service you request
• Legitimate interests: to secure the Service, prevent fraud, improve features, and understand usage, balanced against your rights

5. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only as described below:

• Service providers: trusted vendors that help us operate the Service, including:
  • Google Firebase (Cloud Storage for profile images, Cloud Messaging for push notifications, Remote Config for app configuration)
  • Google Sign-In and Apple Sign-In, when you choose those login methods
  • Hosting, backend infrastructure, email delivery, and support tools
• Other users: community display name, profile photo, and posts/comments you choose to publish may be visible to other authenticated users
• Legal and safety: when required by law, court order, or to protect rights, safety, and security
• Business transfers: in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to continued protection of your information
• Aggregated data: statistics or insights that do not reasonably identify you

6. Device Permissions

BookNawa may request the following permissions:

• Notifications: to send reading reminders, account alerts, and service updates you enable
• Photo library / media access: only when you choose to upload or change your profile picture from your gallery
• Internet and network state: to load content, sync data, and support offline functionality

You can manage or revoke permissions in your device settings. Some features may not work without required permissions.

7. Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements.

• Account and profile data is kept while your account exists
• Reading progress, library data, and community posts may be retained according to your account status and applicable law
• Diagnostic logs and analytics may be retained for limited operational periods before deletion or anonymization
• After account deletion, we may retain limited records where required for security, fraud prevention, or legal compliance

8. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information, including encrypted transport (HTTPS/TLS) and secure credential handling. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. Please use a strong password and notify us promptly if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.

9. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

• Access the personal information we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate or incomplete information
• Delete your account and associated personal data
• Export a copy of your data where technically feasible
• Object to or restrict certain processing
• Withdraw consent for optional processing such as notifications

10. Account and Data Deletion

BookNawa allows users to request deletion of their account and associated personal data.

• In-app: open Profile → Settings → Delete Account and follow the on-screen steps
• By email: send a deletion request to lailakabab@booknawa.com from the email address linked to your account

After verification, we will delete or anonymize personal data within a reasonable period, except where retention is required by law or for legitimate security purposes. Purchases made through Google Play remain subject to Google’s own privacy and purchase policies.

11. Children’s Privacy

BookNawa is not directed to children under 13 years of age (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will take steps to delete it.

12. International Data Transfers

Your information may be processed in countries other than your own, including countries where our service providers operate (such as the United States). Where required, we implement appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent mechanisms.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Material changes may also be communicated in the app or by other reasonable means. Continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised policy, unless applicable law requires additional consent.
